The Original Situation: Last Monday, our boss, Mr. Brown, had a private meeting with the secretary, Jane. I was standing near the door and I heard everything. Mr. Brown said: "I am planning a big celebration. We will give a bonus to everyone because the company had a great year. I have already spoken to the director about it."

The Gossip (What I told my colleagues later): I told everyone that Mr. Brown was planning a big celebration. I said that they would give a bonus to everyone because the company had had a great year. I also mentioned that he had already spoken to the director about it.

The Rumor (What the whole office was talking about next day): By Tuesday, a huge rumor was spreading. People were saying that Mr. Brown had promised a 50% salary increase and he was going to retire!
